03/09/10 It’s the Schedule Baby!

in Schedules

As I told you before (02/28/10 Pretty, Perfect, Planning, Parents), I have some overly educated guardians. As the third child, I reap the benefits of parents who have done this before. My padres have taken more classes and read more books on parenting then perhaps anything else. That said, it should come as no surprise that I am now on a very structured scheduled. From where I sit, I don’t know if this is good advice or not, but it is the life I lead now.

As a breast fed baby, the first few days were “baby directed demand feedings” on my time table to make sure I was gaining weight and I was adjusting well. Now that we are home, I am on  “parent directed scheduled feedings.”

Me Sleeping

The Three Hour Feeding Cycle (Week 2)

12:00a I am woken up if I am not awake, get a feeding, a diaper change, and swaddled back to sleep.
3:00a I am woken up if I am not awake, get a feeding, a diaper change, and swaddled back to sleep.
6:00a I am woken up if I am not awake, get a feeding, a diaper change, and swaddled back to sleep.

I am told by my dad that I don’t get to participate in any additional wake time so that I can learn my nights from my days.

9:00a I am woken up if I am not awake, get a feeding, then 15-30 mins of awake time in the bouncy by the breakfast table before sleep.
12:00p I am woken up if I am not awake, get a feeding, then held in the living room, talked too and played with until I sleep.
3:00p I am woken up if I am not awake, get a feeding, then talk to my brother & sister (home from school) until I sleep.
6:00p I am woken up if I am not awake, get a feeding, and then join the family at the dinner table in my bouncy before sleep.
9:00p I am woken up if I am not awake, get a feeding then sit with Daddy to discuss my blog before I sleep.

Keep in mind Daddy has very little involvement with feedings or schedule outside of a few diaper changes & burping sessions.  Mom makes the necessary adjustments and she knows when I need to feed at a 2 hour mark or if I’m ok till 3 1/2.  This is their guide or what they are shooting  for.  Well there you have it folks. I lead a pretty boring life of mostly feeding and sleeping. I want to know some schedules from the rest of you babies. Comment please!

Well, Jackie was on a schedule but more because she would NEVER wake up to feed. I wish that I could have had more of an on demand schedule, but then again, we got a bit (very little bit) more sleep due to getting her up every three hours. I probably should have done things differently with my low milk supply (like feeding every 2), but it was hard that first month.

I do have to say I don’t agree with the directed schedules for the first 3 months at least (and I would say til 6).. babies know when they are hungry and due to growth spurts they may need to eat more often than every three hours. AND think about it, do you eat at EXACTLY the same time and EXACTLY the same amount of food? No. Neither do babies. Sometimes they need a snack, sometimes a feast.

Even now, with Jackie at 7.5 months.. I still feed her every 3 hours.. but it’s on her schedule, more with her sleep.. if she’s up, she gets food, if not, it waits til she’s up. Babies need the sleep and will wake up when they are hungry. The “brain food” happens when they are sleeping..

Anyway, looks like we have an opposite take on it.. good luck with everything!!
